A Corner of the Universe by: Ann M Martin is a book about a girl named Hattie and her uncle Adam who has a mental disability. It starts with Hattie discovering that she had an uncle she did not know about, once they meet they become quick friends. Hattie spend most of her time looking after Adam and making sure he does not get into trouble. A series of events towards the end of the book lead up to a tragic ending were Hattie loses a friend and her beloved uncle Adam. This is a great book and you should defiantly read it.
Ann M Martin did a great job bringing Adam to life. Every scene that had Adam in it was amazingly detailed from his extremely fast voice to his to small for a twenty-year-old suit. For example the scene were Hattie first meets Adam, you can tell right away how full of life and alive this character is. Adam is definitely the heart and soul of the story.
The next thing the author did well on was bringing the town of Millerton to life. It was a perfect setting for a story like this, a small town that does not see very much excitement and then all of a sudden Adam and the carnival are dumped on the sleepy town. She did a great job describing the excitement surrounding the upcoming carnival and the sadness and grief when Adam died.
I thought it was a great book overall but something the author could have done better would be to maybe make the book a little more exciting at the begining. The begining mostly consisted of Hattie talking to the residents in the boarding house and moping about how she had no friends.
I would recommend this book for deep thinking people who appreciate rich interesting characters and heartwarming stories. You'll laugh and cry as you read this heartwarming story about someone who is labeled as a freak but still can find joy in life and a girl who has the responsibility of looking after him.
