Midnight Magic by Avi is an Action/Adventure Fantasy book. And facing the antagonist Count Scarizoni, and meeting the family of royals. King Cladio, Queen Jovanna, Princess Teresina, and Prince Lorenzo who had been reported as dead by bandits. Stopping the Count from marrying the Princess Fabrizio and Mangus uncover the Prince’s ‘Death’ with the help of Teresina, the Queen, and an odd cook boy named Rinaldo. In the end, the prince is back, and Scarizoni is sent to execution.
Avi’s sense of storyline twists and events is very entertaining and always will keep you up date and wanting to know what will happen next. The characters are full of life and keep the whole story alive and well. His style of adapting to many different settings from farmers to animals and now medieval is creative and thrilling. I have read many of his books, and Avi never seizes to impress.
But his odd style of characterization isn’t what I favor. Focusing only on the more important characters, the characters with the more main rank are easier to describe and picture. Rinaldo, the King, and a number of others are difficult to describe. Some parts are seemingly rushed as if Avi wanted to just get it over with like it was an annoying pest in his way.
Sometimes there are some mistakes, like word choice that doesn’t make sense. And commas that do not belong there. But an odd part as when Magnus was talking to Teresina about her ghost experience it was like this ‘ Magnus: I understand, my Princess.’ Teresina: ‘No, you do not.’ That did not make any sense. It was like reading off some movie script.
Very few mistakes and very well written overall. Fantasy lovers and thrill seekers, who like to read will love this book. With so many twists and turns in a Medieval slightly fake magical story, it will have you keep turning pages.
