Student Resources in Context and Opposing Viewpoints in Context

These two databases are new to Mill Creek in '09-10!  Student Research Center Gold is a general reference resource, and Opposing Viewpoints provides a look at controversial social issues from multiple points of view.

Michigan eLibrary, aka MeL

Michigan eLibrary, or MeL, is a terrific resource for all sorts of research.  For example, it has lots of databases that would be way too expensive for one school to pay for alone.  Ms. Straub's favorite is NoveList, an awesome resource for finding "like" books - as in, "I want a book like Cirque du Freak."  Others include the New York Times archive (95-present), NewsBank Michigan Newspapers, and InfoTrack Junior Edition, just to name a few.

MeL also has a whole section called Michigana, which is dedicated to historical artifacts from Michigan, like old photos and Civil War diaries...very cool!  This section is a great place to find out more about the role Michiganders have played in the United States' history.

PS - If you are at home, you will need a library card number or a parent's driver's license the first time you use a database on MeL, but don't let that stop you!

World Book Online

World Book Web
World Book Online is a set of 5, yep 5, online encyclopedias...including one in Spanish!  These encyclopedias have all the same articles as the print version, plus more - way more.  There are pictures, video clips, timeline builders, and even some BOB books in e-book format!  Next time you are doing research, I'd recommend starting with World Book, as it not only has articles, but also links to great websites for many topics.
