In the book Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan, there is a girl and her family that lived in a huge home and Esperanza was a spoiled brat. The day before Esperanza’s birthday her dad went to work the cattle. It was getting late and Esperanza and her mother began to worry. When they came back they told her that robbers in the woods killed her dad. Tio Luis was a bad man he forced mama to marry him but she refused. Tio Luis was so angry that he burned down their home. Esperanza, her mother, and grandma ran away to a camp in California. When they were at the camp Esperanza had to work and so did her mom. During a dust storm her mom got too much dirt in her lungs and she got very sick. When Esperanza had a break down about working Miguel tried to calm her down but she called him a dirty peasant and he left with her money. That made Esperanza really mad. When Miguel returned he had brought Esperanza’s grandma with him and she said sorry for yelling at him. The next morning she and Miguel woke up early to watch the sun rise together.
I think the author did well at using a lot of detail. She used good detail telling how Esperanza felt when she was spoiled and how different it was to have to work. I thought it was cool that she named the book after fruits because once Esperanza excepted that she had to work she started thinking like a real working person. She didn’t measure the year buy months but by the seasons of fruit. I thought that was very cool.
I didn’t like that it was so dramatic and didn’t tell you everything so you wondered about a lot of things. I personal think that is was too dramatic because nobody gets that upset about working that they drive someone away. I didn’t really like the stereotypes they used on her because not all rich kids act like that and treat people poorer than them as bad as she did.
I didn’t really like it that much because I thought it would be more calm and not very dramatic at all. It was too dramatic for me I wouldn’t recommend it to middle school girls because they don’t need to know anymore about drama or have any more drama in their life.
