Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli is the story of a boy who lives in Arizona in a town called Mica. At the start of the school year, a new girl girl has moved to the town. Her name is Stargirl. She is different, she pays more attention to other people than she does to herself. This book takes you on a journey filled with love, hatred, shunning, and much more.
One thing that the author did well was they had drastic changes of emotion. One minute everyone loves Stargirl, everyone hates her the next. This made the story interesting to me. As a reader I really had to stay on the ball to understand what was going on in the book.
Another thing he did was I could tell that after he wrote his first few drafts he really went through and tried to make all the events in the story make sense. Even the ones that were insignificant to the book. If he had just ignored the parts of the book that weren’t as important, the book wouldn’t have made much sense.
One thing that I didn’t like that the author did was he changed peoples emotions towards Stargirl too much in my opinion. It was fun and it made the book interesting at first when emotions towards Stargirl changed. After a while, the story just got ridiculous. This made the book kind of boring towards the end.
